Christmas Recital

Wholesome Holiday Cheer
by Michael Tyson
Sunday, December 4, 2011. Eyes were aglow and hearts were full of cheer as students and community members performed for family and friends at the first holiday production of the Contemporary School of the Arts and Gallery, Inc. (C.S.A.G.I.)
Held at the Review and Herald Publishing Association, families were treated to a variety of talented piano and guitar students, vocal presentations by Leonard Cooper, a mini Christmas play by Minister Tracy Brown and her church members, and jazz renditions of Christmas Carols by Music Directors Michael Tyson (Guitar) and Aaron Worthy (Saxophone).
“[The presentation] had something for everyone to enjoy,” said Ron Lytle, founder of C.S.A.G.I., who was pleased at the 75 person turnout to C.S.A.G.I.’s first holiday event.
“The parents were thrilled,” added Michael Tyson, Music Director at C.S.A.G.I.
Mr. Tyson, who started the music program two years ago, has seen his students progress since they were beginners and is impressed by their increased skill and confidence.
“Last year my oldest guitar group was playing three-string chords. Today they played ‘Jingle Bell Rock’ and ‘Twist and Shout,’ using melodies and bar chords. Now, I can’t wait to see how this year’s beginners progress.”
In addition to the students, families enjoyed “The Christmas” song, sung by Leonard Cooper, whose warming baritone voice warmed the crowd and brought about smiles. Mr. Cooper runs a barber shop in Downtown Hagerstown and says he sings for fun.
“I don’t ask anything for singing. I love these kind of events,” said Cooper.
Minister Tracy Brown, who coincidentally also runs a beauty salon in Downtown Hagerstown, performed a mini skit of “The Little Drummer Boy,” with children from her church.
“The children loved to tap the drums on stage,” said one parent, referring to Tracy’s presentation, in which more children from the audience were invited onto the stage to play and sing “The Little Drummer Boy.”

“Makin’ Music at the Gallery”
The Contemporary School of the Arts and Gallery hosted its first Music Open House of the 2011 school year on Saturday, September 11.
The Music Open House is primarily geared toward Elementary and Middle School students, however, to the teachers surprise, was attended by two local senior citizens, Barbara Sachs and Del Rose Jackson, in their 60’s and 70’s.
“Music is a joy for all ages,” said Music Director, piano and guitar Teacher, Michael Tyson, who demonstrated the Gallery’s music program along with fellow Music Director, Aaron Worthy, piano, sax, and woodwinds instructor.
Indeed it was, especially for Jackson, who participated in the “Make Your Own Song Mini-Workshop.”
“She was dubious at first, at her ability to make one,” continues Mr. Tyson, “but after a few rounds of the blues’ progression by Aaron, and a brief explanation of the rhyming pattern, she found her voice and the spark of inspiration was lit.”
“I’m going to go home and play it on my guitar!” exclaimed Jackson.
Below is Ms. Jackson’s song:

“Walkin’ up to Franklin”
Walkin’ up to Franklin, into the Gallery
Walkin’ up to Franklin, into the Gallery
Listened to the C note
It made me start to sing.
